Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson checks in with Yahoo Sports’ Draft Live crew to discuss the Los Angeles head coach’s intriguing response following the team’s selection of the Alabama quarterback with the 13th overall pick.
One of the biggest picks last night obviously was Ty Simpson going to the Rams.
But now much is being made of Sean McVay and his press conference and his reaction to it.
What can you tell us?
What, you guys weren’t impressed with Sean McVay’s mannequin?
Like just say, say as little, move as little.
Just kind of look left and right.
yeah, I Look, the reaction was interesting, and I, I, I didn’t catch up to it until late last night, obviously.
We were off the show, and, you know, I was writing and, and I As soon as I got up this morning, I made some calls to try and understand where that came from.
And what I was told was, “Look, this is being overblown.
This was actually completely intentional on Sean McVay’s part.”
Once they spoke to Matthew Stafford, and they told him, “Look, we’re gonna make this pick, but you’re our guy, and we believe you’re our guy beyond 2026, and we really wanna get that deal done with you,” Sean McVay then put in motion what he thought was the right thing to do, which was, “Uh, when I’m on camera, I’m going to be very intentional about the fact that this is Matthew Stafford’s team.
So Les is gonna talk about Ty Simpson.
He’s gonna talk about the pluses.
I’m gonna make it clear this is Matthew Stafford’s team now and into the future.
That is our priority.”
And that’s ultimately what Sean McVay tried to convey.
And, you know, even the point where there’s the phone call, there’s the clip of the phone call, and Ty Simpson says, “Let’s make history, Coach,” and Sean McVay’s kind of like, “Uh, yeah.
All right.
Let’s keep moving.”
Let’s keep- Whatever you say, Skip.
Let me not comment on that and really- Yeah, look, yeah.
Like, so the, the record skipped at that point.
And, eh, but that was completely intentional on Sean’s part.
I think it was just, “Let me convey to Matthew Stafford exactly what we told him when we were making this pick.
This is not gonna turn into an Aaron Rodgers situation, where you’re sitting there and you’re staring at Jordan Love going, you know, ‘What the hell did we do here?'”
