However the sheer unrestrained commercialism and intensely competitive spirit of the modern Whos are pushing the Grinchs fragile goodwill to the absolute breaking point. The residents now use Christmas not for genuine warmth or fellowship but as an aggressive platform to market hyper extravagant gadgets ultra competitive light displays and increasingly hollow spectacles transforming the holiday into a stressful commercial enterprise.
His inevitable cynical regression is rapidly accelerated by the unsettling arrival of Professor Quirke Willem Dafoe a visiting highly eccentric Cheer Scientist. Quirke a man of cold logic and statistical obsession seeks to methodically quantify and ultimately eliminate what he calls the unpredictable element of Christmas magic viewing genuine joy and irrational goodwill as nothing more than a statistical anomaly a bug in the social programming that must be fixed. He represents everything the Grinch once was logical isolated and profoundly anti cheer.
The Grinch finds himself facing the ultimate agonizing dilemma. Should he embrace the familiar comfort of his inner misery and join the logical Professor Quirke in his mission to ruin Christmas forever by proving it is scientifically worthless or should he suppress his rising cynicism and team up with the now grown up determined Cindy Lou Who Taylor Momsen. Cindy Lou is fighting a desperate uphill battle to teach her own gadget obsessed children and the wider community the simple non materialistic meaning of the holiday the genuine spirit of kindness and community that the Grinch himself once discovered.
The reformed grouch must now embark on a completely new and deeply ironic mission. His goal is no longer to steal Christmas a crime he has already committed.
